Five million US dollars lost. And the Stop Murder Music campaign just keeps chugging along. Last week, the advocates of the campaign trumpeted what they claim to be a major breakthrough in their campaign when they got three major reggae artistes, Sizzla, Capleton and Beenie Man to sign the Reggae Compassionate Act. The act, touted as being of historic importance to the gay community, effectively announces that “reggae artistes renounced homophobia, and hailed the deal as “ a major blow against homophobia in the Caribbean and in popular music”.

Wanna read more: http://www.claudemills.com/?p=228

There are some gay activists who use their money power and influence to kill the careers of our dancehall artistes. They do this because they know the power of reggae and dancehall music and they don't want such a popular art form to be used to condemn a lifestyle which they want to see normalized and accepted as a lifestyle. Even though I’d like to see homosexuals gain more rights, I disagree with the way gay activists go about it. The gays are free to campaign against the deejays and to urge boycott of their concerts and record-buying, causing them to lose millions (these are my friends were talking about). So why shouldn’t the deejays have the right to attack the homosexual lifestyle, even if it constitutes prejudice? Everyone has the freedom to speak; however, I think the deejays should do this without using ‘murderous lyrics.’ <div It seems as though I've been searching forever. As far back as I can remember. I know that whatever I was doing, there remained a desolate yearning inside me. I’ve tried to analyze myself in all situations asking “why?” But I think we all ask and wonder. Never did I settle or feel "at one" with the world and all its distractions. Maybe I've always been too much of a thinker, a worrier. Surely there is more to life than what the world offers, we just need to keep searching until we can find it; push our minds to the limit.

I think many of us (homosexuals) are aware of the strange urges for male contact, but because of the unacceptable aspect of it in our societies, we fight the feelings for a good many years. All gay men are as lost as each other and so cannot fill the emptiness that has been there since the first years of childhood. Maybe we need to take on a spiritual approach so that we can find our true selves and somehow be guided. And I think that is what I need to do.

Just been surfing the net all day. Today's my friends birthday...so we went to the beach to hang out and party. However, apart from having all that fun, some conversations we had reminded me of all the pretending I have to do when I'm around them...pretending that I hate the person I really am, but I can't do anything else, can I? It's so degrading to call people a "faggot" when I am one also. I find it difficult living a double life; being a "faggot" is hard for me. After seeing how the people around me treat gay people, I slowly begin to lose respect for them and their perspectives. This has made me depressed, uncomfortable and uneasy around them sometimes. And since recently, I constantly watch the people around me like a hawk, looking for signs of suspicion. Well...thats all for now...Lata. Overall though, I had a pretty good day.

Living a Lie

When I was younger, I had an attraction for my sisters Barbie dolls, I’d try on her clothes etc. In general, an attraction for feminine things I guess. But I never thought of myself as gay…just different.

Later on I found myself having attractions to males which was confusing because previously I had loved girls. And that was when I knew I was gay. I felt a range of emotions; anger, disgust, self-loathing, confusion. I felt scared and lost. I wanted to tell someone but I knew I couldn’t.
Finally I came to accept the fact that I was a ‘battyman’ and found a way to cope with it through my music. This is the person I am now. The other me.

Nobody knows I’m gay. Well who the hell do you tell that to? Definitely not your parents and for damn sure not your best friend. So I buried it deep down and tried to act as straight as I could. I was certain that nobody knew I was gay.

Presently, I’m happily married to a beautiful woman, she doesn’t know because I’m terrified that she’ll leave me once she knows about the feelings that I have for other guys. I guess you could say she’s my cover up - being an artiste made me popular…always on the scene. I had to hide it. I’m a brother on the down-low.

The New Beginning

I thought I had given up writing when I was 30, but I still find this need to express myself and so instead of songs, I'm gonna be blogging. Here goes the first chapter.

I'm a 'battyman' (a Jamaican epithet for homosexual) living in Jamaica, as you probably know, one of the most homophobic countries. Of course you couldn't just walk around and make everybody know you're gay (you'd probably be slaughtered haha). So thats when i started composing my songs.
